It was another success 1st Degree Ceremony, as six new Knights were added to the ranks of Council 11091. Several other councils also sent candidates who became Knights. The Council 11091 Degree Team presided over the ceremony, held at St. Margaret Mary parish in Algonquin.

Sweater Donations Help IL Residents

Our council once again provided the Christmas tree on behalf of the Village of Algonquin. This enormous tree came from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as did all of the trees and wreaths on the tree lot.

Feed My Starving Children - Q4 Shift

It's great to immediately see the impact you have after a shift

In November we participated in our final Feed My Starving Children food packing event for the year. During this 90 minute shift, we packed over 3200 meals - enough to feed nearly 9 kids for a year - and we presented a donation from our Council to FMSC with a check for $104. With this great food packing effort, we exceeded the year's goal I had set for the program by surpassing the 100 boxes-packed mark! For the year, our Council packed a total of 101 boxes of food, which provides nearly 22,000 meals - enough to feed for a year 60 starving kids throughout the world! This is truly life changing and saving work that touches so many people whose families do not have the means or resources to provide food for their kids by themselves. A huge thank you to all of the Knights, family and friends who contributed to the 112 service hours throughout the year for FMSC. This program is a great reminder for all of us of just how much we have to be thankful for, and it is a great way to work as God's hands, feeding his children.

I have begun scheduling our quarterly packing events for next year and our next packing event is targeted for March. Watch the newsletter and your email for more specific details as the date gets closer.

Major Degree a Major Success

Council 11091 members who took their 2nd and 3rd Degrees Sunday

Council 11091 hosted its annual Major Degree last Sunday. Fortunately the Bears and Packers were enjoying a bye week, and the turnout was amazing. Folks from councils across the region came to participate and observe.

We had 19 candidates take their first degree to become new Knights. Some of the observers said it was the best first degree they had ever seen. Kudos to Chris Gonzalez and our council's entire First Degree Team.

An even larger number of First Degree Knights took their Second and Third Degrees immediately after the First Degree ended.

After the Third Degree was completed, a delicious dinner was enjoyed by all.

It was an outstanding showing by everyone from Council 11091, from volunteers to those who attended the degrees.

Mass for Deceased Brothers

On October 23, 2011, Council 11901 conducted its annual Mass for Deceased Brothers. Special thanks to Deacon Cy Grossmeyer and Chancellor Mark Ostrowski for coordinating the efforts. A big thanks to our entire clergy and several Deacons for participating in the mass. Grand Knight Rick Orabutt presided over the membership roll call ceremony for all attending Knights and our 16 deceased Brothers.

At the conclusion of the event, attendees enjoyed a communal dinner in McDonnell Hall.

9-11 Memorial Mass

Deacon Cy Grossmeyer and Chancellor Mark Ostrowski coordinated a beautiful service commemorating the 9-11 tragedy. The church was packed, and professionals from local police, fire, and the air transportation industry were present.

New Paint for McDonnell Hall

Knights put on their grubby clothes for a couple evenings in October to give the walls of McDonnell Hall a new coat of paint. This is in response to the water damage incurred in the facility. Soon everything should be as good as ever. Kudos to Ken Prigge for spearheading the job.

Knight of the Month

Joel Kolner is new to the Knights, but has exemplified the “can do” spirit that the Knights of Columbus is known for. Joel has been involved in just about every activity in the past 2 months, but January found him as busy as usual with Nativity Scenes, RE Rosary handouts, and coordinating the Hockey Tournament family outing. Our thanks go out to Joel and his family for all of their hard work! I am proud to name Joel Kolner as our Knight of the Month for January!

Family of the Month

Our Parish and Council are truly blessed with Catholic men who are leaders for their families and examples for those of us around them. Allen and Joyce Shulfer, along with their children (Megan, Mitch, Sophia and Simon) quietly get things done both at home and for their Parish and Council ministries. Being active in Scouting (both girl and boy), Barrington Giving Day, Christian Youth Theater, Feed My Starving Children, and many other activities keeps the Shulfer family humming along each and every week. I haven’t even mentioned the various Knights activities Allen and his family participates in, but please join me in recognizing the Allen & Joyce Shulfer family as our Family of the Month for January!

Free Throw Contest Winners

Our council Free Throw Championship was held in January with a total of 21 participants.

Winners in the girl’s category were: Jessica Neumann (10), Amy Digiulio (11), Emily Minneci (12), and Sarah Benigni (13). Winners in the boy’s category were: Matthew Benigni (10), Christian Fernandez (11), Cole Johnson (12), Nick Nemtuda (13), and Kevin Kotleba (14). Emily topped all shooters with an impressive 13 out of 15 attempts.

Congratulations to the champions who will now move onto the district competition, which we are hosting on Saturday February 26th. Setup begins at 11:45.

We had another big turnout this year for the Council 11091 Family Christmas Party. About 150 people were in attendance. Patrick Colcernian did a great job as the emcee of the talent show. We have some extremely talented kids.

Great Tree Lot Season

Brothers,

We would like to offer a big thanks to all who participated with this year's Tree Lot. We officially closed Sunday, with only 2 trees unsold out of the 290 we ordered. We provided the church with three complementary trees for the outside entrance area, as well as one for the rectory, and the three 60" wreaths you will see at Christmas services. We were also able to help out six needy families with a tree or a wreath (at their discretion), all complements of Council 11091.

In addition to trees and wreaths, we sold a lot of Nativity sets and accessories, as well as some magnets, tabletop sets, lights, and tree stands.

It was once again a highly profitable season because of those who contributed their time at the lot. We want to thank Brother Chris Cimaglio for helping secure this year's tree supplier, and for providing us with lights and tree stands for sale at the lot. The quality of the trees was excellent, and we were able to give the Village a beautiful 20' tree for Riverfront Park. If you haven't seen it yet, take a drive by the park one night before it is taken down.

Thank you to the Friday night crew who kept the lot open into the wee hours on several occasions. That's dedication.

We have to give a big thank you to all the non-Knights who participated. I won't be able to recall everyone I saw at the lot, but I know the Nejman boys (Kyle and Cameron), as well as Kevin Fitzgerald's son (Kevin), and Les Paprot's son put in many hours of service. Also, thanks to everyone who brought us chili, polish sausage, and yummy treats to snack on. Finally, a warm thank you to Sal Bongiovanni for once again offering a big discount for food ordered from Sal's Pizza Company. Anyone not mentioned in this email, your contributions are greatly appreciated, and it wouldn't have been the same without your generosity.

The Friday and Saturday shifts did a great job breaking down much of the area, so most of the work is done. We'll send out an email with the date and time of the final cleanup. We'll need to tow the trailers back to the parking lot at that time. Currently, the ground is too frozen to pull up the fence posts.

The final step is to tally the final sales results and complete the Activity Report for the January meeting. Thank you for entrusting us with this awesome project. We already have some great ideas for next year.

Adopt a Highway

The Adopt-A-Highway Program covers a two mile stretch (both sides) along Algonquin Road (RT 62) from the bridge over the Fox River,east to Rt 25. Maybe you have noticed the signs as your come west on RT 62 from RT 25 or when you turn onto Hubbard coming from the west. This program gives alot of exposure to both members of the Parish and also the general public. It is an easy program to do as it only needs to be done a couple of times a year and rarely takes more than 2 hours to do on a Saturday Morning (and we are do to have the fall clean up Sept or early October).

We will be needing a new Co-Chairman for the Adopt-A-Highway program as Bill Burg wont be able to walk the two mile distance for some time. He has been the coordinator with the State of Illinois and lets them know when we are doing the sweep and when they can pick up the trash we collect ( we also get alot of cans for the recycle program we have). Aldo Simoni takes care of handing our the Colorful Vests and bags the state provides us each time we do this

So, lets have some one step up and take this on-its very simple to do and does not take alot of time. A great project for one of the newer Knights to get involved with and take charge. Call (847-323-6304) or email (wlburgjr@hotmail.com) for details

St Margaret Mary Council #11091 has been collecting cans and other metals for a few years now for recycling and then partnering with Organizations that donate wheel chairs to children, adults and veterans that need them . Not only did we set a new record of 508 lbs of aluminum cans in a single load, but we found out that they will even take stainless steel kitchen sinks. Summer is usually a great time for collecting aluminum cans with all the out door BBQ's and such so we expect to break the spring record next time we do this

August Blood Drive Recap

On Sunday, August 15, 2010 our council held another successful Blood Drive as we were able to collect 96 pints of blood which was just 4 pints below our goal of 100 pints. The $15.00 gift card to Target proved to be a great incentive as we saw a lot of new faces. New faces are a very positive for future Blood Drives as we hope to see those people at future Blood drives.

I want to mention a special word of thanks to the 18 Brother Knights that came out to donate. That number is down from past drives but we had a number of Brother Knights that donated on the Alyx machine at our last drive and were not eligible to donate this month.

We awarded three door prizes and the winners were Greg Haluzak who won a certificate for a Luxury Car Wash at Handle With Care Car Wash located in Lake in the Hills. Rosemary Gruenes won a certificate for a free oil change at Merlins 200,000 Mile Shop in Algonquin. Tonia Gonzalez won a $10.00 certificate to The Thirsty Whale in Algonquin. Michelle Perna won a $10.00 certificate to Buffalo Wild Wings in
Algonquin.

As you know we increased our goal to 80 pints per drive and this drive really help us get back on track. I would love to see this same kind of turnout at our next Blood Drive on October 17, 2010. If we could just double the turnout from our council from 18 to 36 Brother Knights I know we could make it. I urge you to make every effort to attend our next drive on October 17, 2010 and bring your family members and neighbors.

If you are not able to make our blood drive dates you can still donate so our council will receive credit. Just make an appointment at one of the LifeSource Centers and tell the staff that the donation is being made for code U202 which is our council. Last year our council picked up 21 pints at the various LifeSource Donor Centers. The closest center is in Crystal Lake, IL and others are available on the LifeSource website

Four New Knights in Council 11091

The First Degree ceremony was held on 8/19. We welcomed in seven new Brother Knights. Four of them have joined our council (see photos). Among the others, one was from Crystal Lake, one from Elgin, and one from Naperville (soon to be at The Ohio State University).

Sal's Pizza was enjoyed by all after the ceremony.

The Degree Team would like to thank all the Brother Knights who attended.

2010 Clay Shoot at Coon Creek

The Clay Shoot was once again a big success, judging by the faces and discussions among the participants and observers.

We had 46 participants in a true family affair: 21 Knights and 25 family members or guests. Of the 46, we had 37 contestants on sporting clays range shooting over 1,850 clay pigeons. Couple that with roughly another 300 clays on the speed course, and the Knights shot at over 2,150 little orange disks.

Of course, at the end of the day, the little orange disks had the last laugh as we ended breaking only a little more then 540 of those.

The defending champion defended well, breaking 38 out of 50 pigeons. We did have a couple of Knights only breaking 1 pigeon, so we can officially record zero skunks at the range in 2010.

We had warm weather, but it was dry after a brief scare from some rogue rain clouds. Most folks had their fill of pizza and pop or water and we were all home by 3 pm or so.

Had enough of outdoor events getting rained out? Well get ready - the All Night BINGO Breakfast at Marian Central Catholic High School is held indoors, and is coming on Saturday October 16th.

The Marian Father’s Club is THRILLED with our decision to provide breakfast and is convinced that this addition to their event will be a huge selling point. Advertisements targeted to the BINGO community will include our breakfast as a new feature. Our own survey of ANB participants at the Spring event indicated an interest in breakfast by 60% of the attendees.

Last week, I spoke with our contact in the school office to start the internal process of coordinating the kitchen, custodian, and administration resources that we will need.

While the BINGO games begin at 7PM on Saturday, our arrival won’t be until around midnight, and the work will go into Sunday morning.

The St. Vincent de Paul Conference of St. Margaret Mary Church will be participating in the third annual Walk for the Poor. This national walk spotlights the need to assist the poor across the United States . They have partnered with six other local conferences to participate in the walk at St. Catherine of Siena in West Dundee on Sat., Sept. 25, 2010 beginning at 8 a.m. They are asking the knights to participate. I will be talking more about it at our next business meeting, but there is a deadline to get a t shirt for signing up to walk, which is July 30th. Founders Days Remembers the Past

We are about to embark on our annual community gathering that is Founders Days. Let us remember that there was a time not long ago where Algonquin and its surrounds were mostly corn fields and cow pastures.

As you watch our friends in the video celebrate in homage to our once-sleepy town's past, you may even want to dance. Bring out da funk and bust a move.

Bill Burg Prayer Service

Greetings Brothers,

Join us for the healing power of prayer tonight for a Brother Bill Burg.

Our Brother Bill went into the hospital over this past weekend. He went into the hospital for pneumonia and other complications.

We will be having a prayer service at 8:00 pm in the evening on Monday July 19th. It will be in at Room at McDonnell Hall.

If you cannot join us, please keep Bill and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they make it through this health crisis.

Clay Pigeon Shoot

From the Grand Knight...

Brothers-

Our annual Clay Pigeon Shoot is coming up fast on August 7th. As in years past, it will be held on a Saturday morning at the Coon Creek Hunt Club.

We have 22 Knights with family and friends signed up at the moment, we can comfortably handle about 50 or so for the event. If you plan on attending, be sure to let me know by August 1st if possible at 847-658-1568 or ahlje@comcast.net.

This is a great morning of "busting clays" with your Brothers and friends in a safe and comfortable environment. If you haven't shot before, we will have plenty of shotguns available at all sizes. Stuart and I, along with the staff at the club, will be doing a safety talk at 8:00 am with the shoot starting around 8:30. As we did last year, the owner of the club will be giving beginners a course to learn how to enjoy shooting clays and operate a shotgun.

If you have interest, let me know, I will be sending all those folks a longer write-up the week prior.

Cost this year is the same as last year:

$8.00 per round of 25 clays (you will likely shoot both sides, so 50 clays @ $16.00)

$6.50 per box of shells (25 to a box, so if you shoot both sides, $13.00)

The speed shoot will be operating again this year, so plan on that again (it is an addicting combo shoot with a partner!).

FOID card? If you are planning bringing your own shotgun or purchasing ammo before arriving, you will need your FOID card for that. If you plan on showing up and using another's shotgun and ammo, no FOID card is needed.

Bug spray and sun screen should be in your bag.......if you bring, we will have cool, cloudy, bug free day. If you don't......

We usually order pizzas for lunch for those that stick around. The shoot is typically over by noon.

Mechanic Needed: St. Vincent DePaul Society

Brothers,

As most of you know, our Council has agreed to be a resource to the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Margaret Mary. What this means is that if the SVDP teams discover a family that is in need of a specific skill to help them get back on their feet, we would go to our membership and see if those services can be provided at reduced cost or free.

Keep in mind that SVDP would not bring us a case that wasn't in severe need, so as we get these, please know that your help would go a very long way in keeping a family or individual on track to getting back on their feet in these tough times.

Brother Dean Duley, our SVDP liason, has received the following request for automobile mechanic services. Please let us know if you have these skills available as soon as possible to help this family out. You can contact Dean (dduley@aeg-usa.com) or myself (ahlje@comcast.net) if you can help of if you have questions.

Hi all - Village Hall confirmed we have the pool August 15th 6:30. I will modify the K of C Monthly Newsletter article, Church announcement, Church bulletin and new Altar Server Appreciation forms to put out soon.

I will communicate this also at next council meeting, requesting new budget and plan to have food ready at 6:00 so as people arrive they can eat while we're all waiting for the pool to open at 6:30.
